Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common type of roofing found across the US, and Arizona is no exception. For commercial use, shingles can be a cost-effective and durable option, with architectural shingles enhancing the building’s appearance. This roofing product is suitable across various climates, holding up well in the snowy winters of Flagstaff to the hot summers of Phoenix. As a GAF Master Elite Contractor, we prefer to use GAF Timberline HDZ shingles due to their high quality and attractive appearance, offering up to a 25-year workmanship and 50-year material warranty through GAF.
ABOUT ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOFING
Asphalt shingle roofs are one of the most affordable roofing systems available for high slope roofs. They are made from asphalt base layers and colored granules that protect the asphalt from the elements. Many manufacturers produce shingles today, including GAF, Owens Corning, Malarkey, and CertainTeed. In Arizona, GAF shingles are particularly effective, standing up well against wind and the elements. Additionally, we can offer up to a 25-year workmanship and 50-year material warranty through GAF’s Gold Pledge warranty, making GAF our preferred choice.
THE ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOFING SYSTEM
Asphalt shingles need to be installed on a solid, clean, and smooth roof deck. The installation begins with underlayment, which may include GAF WeatherWatch ice and water barrier along the eaves, in valleys, and around penetrations depending on your climate zone. This barrier prevents water from getting underneath where ice dams typically occur. For the main roof area, we use a GAF synthetic underlayment, which is more durable than traditional felt.
Shingles are installed in successive courses from the eaves to the ridge, nailed on with 4-6 nails per shingle, depending on the wind resistance required by code. Typically, we use at least five nails per shingle for extra wind insurance. Ridge caps are installed last, with a preference for installing away from prevailing winds.
