Asphalt shingles roofs are the most common roof found across the US, with Arizona being no exception. For commercial use, shingles can be a lower cost and highly durable option, with architectural shingles enhancing the appearance of the building. This roof product is universal across climates, holding up well in the snowy winters of Flagstaff down to the hot summers of Phoenix. As a GAF Master Elite Contractor, we prefer to use GAF Timberline HDZ shingles due to their high quality and nice appearance and can extend up to a 25 year workmanship and 50 year material warranty through GAF.
ABOUT ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOFING
Asphalt shingle roofs are one of the lower cost roofing systems available for high slope roofing systems. They are made from asphalt base layers, and colored granules on the face to protect the asphalt from the elements. There are many manufacturers of shingles today, including GAF, Owens Corning, Malarkey, Certainteed, and many more. Here in Arizona, we’ve found GAF shingles to last well, withstand wind and the elements well, and on top of that, we can offer up to a 25 year workmanship and 50 year material warranty through their Gold Pledge warranty, making our choice obvious.
THE ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOFING SYSTEM
Asphalt shingles need to be installed to a solid roof deck, cleaned and smooth. First, underlayment is installed over the roof. This may consist of a GAF WeatherWatch ice and water barrier along the eaves, in valleys, and around penetrations depending on your climate zone. This self-adhered ice and water barrier will not allow water to get underneath it where ice dams typically occur and force water underneath the shingles. In the main part of the roof, we will install a GAF synthetic underlayment that is much more durable than the old felt that was used.
Once the underlayment is installed, shingles are installed in successive courses starting from the eaves and working your way up towards the ridge. They are nailed on with 4-6 nails depending on wind resistance needed by code. Typically, we will install at least five per shingle as extra wind insurance.
Once the main areas have been installed, ridge cap is installed, with preference given to installing away from prevailing winds in your area.
